Suppose you have a lot of Steam games, but not a lot of local disk space. Maybeyou're using a laptop for some light gaming and don't want to sacrifice severalhundred gigabytes of your local storage. Maybe you have a couple computers anddon't want to reinstall several games on each if you'll be playing at home.
At the same time, you have a home NAS (network attached storage) device of somekind, with plenty of space. Can you use your NAS to store Steam games? Yes!
You can choose network location for Steam downloads if it's been mapped as anetwork drive. With a couple more steps, everything will work.
- Map your NAS as a network drive
- Add the mapped drive as a download location in Steam
- Install your games normally
- Map your NAS as a network drive again as administrator
- Play your games
Steam Library Folder Missing
Steam – Is it possible to use the same steam library folder on multiple OSs steam Mostly when booting multiple operating systems on the same computer, it seems really inefficient to have every game twice (or even three times), considering it's mostly the same. After clicking the Steam Library Folders button, an interface with all your Steam library folders will pop up. All you need to do is open File Explorer (Windows), Finder (Mac) or whatever file explorer your operating system uses and type the 'Folder' path into the address bar. Steam Library Manager. Steam Library Manager is a free, open-source app that gives users a more intuitive interface for managing their Steam library. It can also clear residual files. The app has not been developed by Valve, nor is it associated with it. Download and install Steam Library Manager from Github. Go to the Library. Just rename the folder, set up a new folder with the name as the Steam library on that drive since it needs a clean spot, move all the games into the new folder and restart Steam. Generally all your saves will carry over, since they mostly save to the game folder which you copied over or to a separate folder outside Steam which usually isn't. More Steam UI changes - Library folders in Steam are being remade as a library manager, which displays a breakdown of what is taking space.
You need the network location to have a local disk label (C:, D:, Y:, Z:). Youcan do this from the File Explorer
-> This PC
-> Computer
->Map network drive
.
Follow the prompts, and select 'Reconnect on sign in'.
From the main menu, select Steam
-> Settings
-> Downloads
.
From here, select Steam Library Folders
.
From this menu, select Add Library Folder
. The top drop down will let youselect other drive labels. Add the label that you mapped your NAS to, and makeit the default download location by right clicking it in the folders list.
The easy part! If you don't have a game installed, select Install
from theLibrary
view in Steam. If the game is already installed on the local disk andyou'd like to move it to the NAS, right click on the game in the list in theLibrary
view. From here, Local Files
-> Move Install Folder
.
Steam Library Folder Same Drive
Steam will move the game content to the new location and reverify theinstallation.
If you've tried to start a newly installed game on your NAS before this point,it may have failed. Some games requires Administrator priviledges to installadditional game components like DirectX. Internally, network drives are mappedon a per user basis. This means that when you elevate Steam to administrator toinstall something else on the system, it can no longer see the game files.
This typically looks like the game failing to start, without any errors. To fixthis, we need to also map the network drive as administrator. We can do thiswith an Administrator Powershell. Hit the Windows key
, type Powershell
,right click Run as Administrator
. You'll only have to do this for the firsttime a game runs, and when it requires additional components.
The command to run has this structure:
Where the drive label
you choose is the same as what you chose earlier in thefile explorer.
For example:
If this succeeds, you should be able to access the drive label you used fromthis Administrator Powershell session.
With that, you're ready to play your games!
Additionally, if you have other computers with access to the NAS with Steaminstalled, you can add the same location as a library there, and all the gameswill show up as installed too - no download required.

The data files for Omnisphere are stored in your STEAM folder. When you update your patches or soundsources, you are updating files in your STEAM folder, which was created when you originally installed Omnisphere. Your STEAM folder is located inside your Spectrasonics folder. See the instructions below to find your Spectrasonics folder. Inside your Spectrasonics folder you'll find STEAM, which may be the STEAM folder, or it may be an alias (Mac) or Shortcut (Window) to the STEAM folder.
On Mac, the Spectrasonics folder is located here:
Macintosh HD/Users/<Your Username>/Library/Application Support/Spectrasonics
From Mac OS X 10.7 and higher, Apple have made the User - Library folder a hidden folder by default. This is to stop general Mac users fiddling with settings, however, music makers will require using this folder from time to time.
Please see the handy article below on how to unhide your User Library folder in Mac OS X 10.7 or higher
On Windows Vista and Windows 7, the Spectrasonics folder is located here:
C:ProgramDataSpectrasonics
ProgramData is normally a hidden file. To 'Show Hidden Files' go to Start Menu/Control Pane/Appearance And Personalization/Folder Options/View tab. Select the 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' option and hit 'Apply'

Storing sound files on a secondary drive
If you are wanting to store your Omnisphere audio files on a second hard drive, you can put the Spectrasonics/STEAM folder onto your second drive. You will then need to create an alias or 'short cut' to this location on your main Mac or Windows drive. You can create an alias (Mac) or a short cut (Windows) by right-clicking (ctrl+click for Mac users) the STEAM folder and selecting it from the menu.
Once you have done this, you will then need to either locate or create the following folder on your main drive:
On Mac, the Spectrasonics folder needs to be created here:
Macintosh HD/Users/<Your Username>/Library/Application Support/Spectrasonics
On Windows Vista and Windows 7, the Spectrasonics folder needs to be located here:
C:ProgramDataSpectrasonics
Steam Library Folder Repair
On Windows XP, the Spectrasonics folder needs to be created here:
C:Documents And SettingsAll UsersApplication DataSpectrasonics
You will then need to move the STEAM alias folder (or the STEAM short cut folder) into the Spectrasonics folder on your main drive.
Merge Steam Library Folders
Note: On Mac, once you have placed the 'STEAM alias' folder on your main drive, you will need to rename it removing the word alias from the file, otherwise it will not work. You should now have a 'STEAM' folder on your main drive that is pointing to its actual location on your second drive.
Now when you close and re-launch your host application, Omnisphere should be pulling the audio files from off of the second hard drive.
